M&E BUILDING SERVICES ENGINEER

Group Property at IKEA Services AB is responsible for the property portfolio of the IKEA Group. This entails among other things the purchase of land, construction of new buildings, extensions, remodeling and relocation of existing property and the maintenance of the total portfolio in all the 26 countries that IKEA has business within.

One of the primary tasks of Group Property  within IKEA Services is to provide clear and appropriate guidelines to the IKEA Country organizations as to the specifications and design details of the projects. This is of immense help to the IKEA Country organizations, who have the responsibility to execute projects in their countries.

Within Group Property   the Construction department is divided into Civil/Structural, M&E Building Services, Construction/Project management and Cost Management. They provide guidelines for between 10-15 major building projects annually and 20-25 rebuilding or relocation projects annually to the IKEA Country organizations.

The department is small but very efficient and the people working here are very dedicated experienced engineers with several years of working experience and expertise within their area.

The technical disciplines of M&E Building Services (HVAC, Sanitary, Electrical distribution and Building management systems) are a very important part of the total building and therefore the vacant position as M&E Building Services Engineer needs to be filled as soon as possible. This position is vacant due to new assignments within the department for the current M&E Building Services Engineer.

 The M&E Building Services Engineer is responsible for:

  1. Reviewing and maintaining IKEAS's existing Guidelines and Specifications for building services, as contained in various manuals, including obtaining feedback from the Facility Management discipline.
  2. Reviewing the existing performance criteria for IKEA's Buildings, relating to internal climate, lighting and power.
  3. Working with consultants and IKEA staff internationally to develop improved Building Services systems, which are appropriate (in terms of life cycle costs) both to the internal environment, and the external conditions.
  4. Providing support and advice to country construction organizations, relating to building services issues.
  5. Managing IKEA's Energy model (based on IDA) to support projects internationally in order to optimize the design of the building and its technical systems.

 Background:

The candidates should have a relevant background from Electrical or Mechanical engineering from either construction companies, consulting firms or Building Services systems companies.

 The requirements for the position is:

  • A professional qualification within either Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or both).
  • At least 5 years' experience of design (most important) and implementation of building services installations in large commercial applications.
  • A good working knowledge of the Swedish Indoor climate energy program, IDA, or similar simulation model.
  • Strong management/leadership skills in terms of negotiation and influencing others.
  • Fluent ability in written and spoken English.
  • Can travel up to 30-40% of the time (during normal working weeks).

Besides the mandatory requirements it is very good if the candidates possess the following skills:

  • A good working knowledge of the other M&E disciplines (although sanitary engineering is less important)
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Teambuilding and coaching skills
  • Cost consciousness
  • Good knowledge of the construction industry
  • Proven skills in handling external suppliers and consultants
  • Analytical and tactical abilities
  • Self-awareness and a good ability to listen to others

 Support:

During the first months the new employee will receive introduction, support and training, but it is expected of the new employee to take charge of projects early on.

 The M&E Building Services Engineer will also work closely together with the Facility Management department who will provide a lot of feedback regarding which Building Services systems is working well and which needs improvement.

Focus:

The main focus in this position is preserving energy and providing an effective Indoor climate.
